On Truffles and Directions
I am not sure how people navigated before Google Maps, nor am I sure how people found out about the nice little shops around where they live before Yelp. I think I used to just get out and drive around. But, then I lived in a place small enough that there was parking everywhere. Today, I went on a perilous journey for Truffles and a few groceries. I used Google Maps to navigate my journey-- the whole half mile I was going. Due to a lack of initiative, I didn't eat lunch beforehand. I started to feel a bit woosey when I reached the truffle shop and ordered my obligatory mocha in exchange for a free truffle. After eating my delicious, albeit rolled in cocoa, dark chocolate truffle and downing about half of my mocha, I began to realize my huge mistake: not eating enough today and filling up on sweet, sugary goodness. I trudged on to shopping, consulting my directions, which were: Turn right on Bay Street. After a few panicky minutes, I reached Bay Street and completed all my shopping. Now, I had to find my way back. This is the hard part. For some reason, I have beyond no sense of direction. In fact, I have a few methods for dealing with my lack of direction (without the GPS): Number One-- Follow people that look like they are going to where you are headed. I tried this other day, thinking that the people must also be headed to the Embarcadero because they were dressed for work. It didn't work out so well. Number Two-- Take the direction you instinctively think you should be going and got he opposite way. It still surprises me how well this one works. Since I was in NorthBeach and just needed to head back uphill, I navigated via Coit Tower, which worked surprisingly well. (Except for when I was ramping up to hike the big hill and adjusted the mop I was holding in my left hand and hit myself in the head with it. Thank you, passerby, who saw me and asked me if I was OK. I will now be replaying that embarrassing moment in my head for years to come).
